Pueblito Canada, an international development agency based in Toronto,
has worked successfully and tirelessly for 35 years to provide quality, inclusive child and youth development projects in marginalized communities in Latin America. Through a community development – based approach, we support children and youth so that they have access to a stimulating education environment, a caring and supportive community with family involved in the education process, proper nutrition at school, and ultimately a better start in life.
In partnership with local organizations, Pueblito is currently focusing on education and nutrition in Nicaragua through the projects Primary Colours, Education First - ¡ArtWorks2! and Healthy Kids! Preschool Lunch Project.
Primary Colours Project
This project has just been set up in January 2009. It will train educators who teach at the early primary level (Grades 1 to 3) in 14 public primary schools in the city of Estelí. 155 teachers will be trained to use an innovative, art-based methodology that promotes creative expression, self-esteem, independence, and healthy communication. Primary Colours will ensure that public primary education in Nicaragua is meeting the psychological, emotional and social development needs – as well as the academic needs - of young Nicaraguans. Almost 5,800 students in Grades 1 to 3 will benefit from this three year project.
Education First - ¡ArtWorks2! Project
In 2004, a series of training workshops called ¡ArtWorks! were established. This project improves the quality of preschool education in rural Nicaragua. Community preschool teachers in remote areas are finally being provided with the knowledge and skills they require to meet the learning needs of the children. Since 2008, ¡ArtWorks2! has been providing training for an additional 33 community preschool teachers representing 30 different community preschools, in the most remote districts. 400 community preschool students are benefitting directly.
Healthy Kids! Preschool Lunch Project
Since 2007, Pueblito Canada has funded a nutrition project at community preschools of one of the poorest sectors of the capital city, Managua. The children at four preschools are ensured proper nutrition daily, which positively affects their ability to learn. This program is reaching more and more children each year. |
